To strengthen our team at the Chair of Medical Physics of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich we are seeking for a

1 Postdoctoral Researcher

to be employed within the ERC project SIRMIO (Small animal proton Irradiator for Research in Molecular Image-guided radiation-Oncology) for 2 years.

Your job:

  • Design of a focusing unit for swift particle beams
  • Simulation of the complete setup by Monte-Carlo simulations, mindful of interfaces at pre-defined particle accelerator beamlines and the application site
  • Planning, designing and executing experimental campaign based on (medical) accelerators

Our requirements:

  • PhD or similar expertise in physics
  • Expertise in particle optics, accelerator technology, numerical simulation
  • Practical experience in planning and execution of experimental campaigns in international collaboration
  • High level of creativity
  • Ability to work independently and to guide co-workers
  • Experience in coding and documentation standards, programming languages (preferably C/C++, Python, MATLAB) and Linux and Windows OS
  • Fluent English knowledge (spoken and written)

The LMU Chair of Medical Physics offers a multi-disciplinary environment and works on various core-topics of ion beam therapy. With the SIRMIO project, we aim to provide a platform where small animals can be irradiated under controlled conditions with beam parameters that are so far not accessible by conventional approaches. The main goal of your work will be to achieve (sub)mm-beams at the application site and implement your solution in the final demonstration study of SIRMIO.

The working place will be at the Forschungszentrum Garching, which is well connected with public transportation to the city of Munich. Disabled candidates are preferentially considered in case of equal qualification. Applications from women are encouraged.

If you are interested in this position, please send us your application (letter of motivation, curriculum vitae, last school certificate, university degree including grades, publication list, other qualification certificates like TOEFL) until the 28 th of January 2018 via email to
